Character Info
◎ Character's Name: Masamune Date (western order)
◎ Character's Canon: Sengoku Basara
◎ Character's Age: Mid to late 20s
◎ Canon Point: Sengoku Basara 4 (drama route) - after his Manly Fight with Yukimura.
◎ Background/History: general embarrassing information, translations for masamune's drama route
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? He's from the Sengoku era so the farthest thing from a hacker, and the only sixth-sense he has is a very big attraction towards trouble and giving Kojuro a headache.
◎ Personality:
" It might be fun... and I do have some time to kill. "
Masamune Date's a samurai who's made a pretty good name for himself in his time, both as a young general and a formidable foe, regardless of his age. Known throughout the land as the "One-Eyed Dragon", most of his time on screen is spent spouting odd English phrases in historical Japan ( don't ask me how that works ) or making lightning fall out of the sky in the midst of an explosive battlefield while wielding six swords and standing on a horse ( "explosive" quite literally, by the way. don't ask about that either ). If that's not hint enough that Masamune's one hell of a guy, well then. I don't know what is.
To start off, Masamune is more often than not seen taking things a little lightly. He acts cool. It's his style, and he likes to portray that whenever possible. Dragon-motif? Check. Eyepatch? Check. Six swords? Check. When it comes to keeping a cool head, Masamune's good. Really good. And he certainly knows he's good, which he will not hesitate to voice with taunts or airy statements here and there, even while fighting an enemy who is, perhaps, out of his league. His confidence, while motivational to his troops and slightly admirable to see, can be a bit of a double-edged sword. While there is no doubt he's motivational, he's also incredibly cocky, with a side of copious amounts of ambition--instead of caution, he'll welcome any big threat with an "oh you came to me so I can beat you up, I didn't want to waste my time walking to you so thanks a lot". When Masamune walks into a fight, he walks in fully expecting to win. You'd think you'd be a little disheartened at some general big-shots starting stuff in your neighborhood, but nah. Masamune's got this.
Even without the Engrish and Lightning, you've still got a pretty striking man. Masamune's the young commander of the Date, number one of Oshuu, and, as stated, an eccentric guy in a series full of eccentric guys. Intelligence doesn't seem like an obvious trait when it comes to the roaring One-Eyed Dragon. He is, at times, impulsive and lacking any hesitation towards situations that might seem a little bit alarming. Often, he makes decisions that to his second-in-command seem whimsical and reckless--a point highlighted in his SB4 normal route, where he decides to take in individuals from opposing, defeated armies into his own, regardless of the fact that they may want revenge, and also when he takes in Shibata Katsuie, merely because he had eyes that resembled his own in the past. While he's a bit (very) reckless and prideful when it comes to strategic retreats and giving up fights when he's down, Masamune is by no means unintelligent. He's perceptive and capable of handling tough situations on his own (though that's more of Kojuro, his right eye's, thing), and more often than not he can see through people's true intentions. Granted, while he's got some capabilities in strategizing, he's by no means a genius in it. He'd much rather prefer to get things done through strength and his own skills, and his tendency to get impulsive when it comes to battle and personal attachments (read: his army). He'll understand situations and respond to them accordingly, but he never really takes or creates the most efficient path on his own. He trusts his army enough to pick up the rest. To put it simply, it's not as if he doesn't have a battle plan for backing up his grandiose words--he just doesn't methodically plot out what he needs to do, instead taking a general direction and filling the steps in as he goes.
Of course, this isn't a bad thing in all cases, even if it blows up in his face sometimes. When it comes to leading, Masamune's got a pretty solid idea on how to do it judging from the loyalty of his followers, though he does it in a way different from other commanders in the series. Where there is usually order and some kind of old-fashioned decorum among the ranks of other armies, Masamune's acts as more a gang of thugs than an organized military force. Members integrated into the force are referred to as "younger brothers", and Masamune himself is referred to as "Number One" (Hittou) with a sense of protectiveness that is mutual on both sides. His affection is not explicit and he does take a leadership role with orders and not requests, as he should, but there is a sense of responsibility for both their well-being and future on his shoulders that he takes into account, though at times his prideful personality leads him into disadvantageous situations as a need to return a favor (good or bad, which he makes sure to do).
Yes, Masamune's a bit (understatement) of a loose cannon, but he's truly a Good Guy.
He'll cooly play off his good tasks whenever possible, but when it comes to trust, once you're pegged as one of his own, you are one of his own. He's dependable and most of the time he trusts that people are the same way to him. He's got a very big "group mentality", where people who're taken in under his care are all worth the same, and no one is disposable. So, honestly, Masamune's kind of a pleasant guy. He never has malicious intentions--in fact, meet him and he'll be casual and friendly, if not a little weird (because really, he's a samurai spouting engrish phrases and dressed like... he's dressed), but never really mean. Despite his "cool" behaviour, he's got a fair bit of energy for the things he's interested in, and he shows it. Moderately. Sometimes explosively, if individuals like Sanada Yukimura are involved.
The full depth of Masamune's trust can be seen in the relationship between him and his second-in-command, Katakura Kojuro. Masamune refers to Kojuro as his "Right Eye" without hesitation--and he trusts him entirely to protect the back of the dragon as it soars. There is an unvoiced understanding between the two, and unlike the Masamune on the battlefield who is cocky and loud, meetings with Kojuro show another side of Masamune--the pensive, quiet Masamune off the battlefield, who considers things internally and doesn't always articulate what he's thinking in speech. Masamune can be both incredibly easy and incredibly hard to understand at times, and, while his intentions and future goal might not be clear, most can trust that he acts with two things in mind. One: the good of his people and two: forwarding the name of the "One-Eyed Dragon" while uniting the country. Of course, Kojuro and Masamune don't always see... eye-to-eye, as it were, mainly as Kojuro's methods are more precise where Masamune's are high-risk, high-reward (though Kojuro enjoys going crazy in his own way, and trusts Masamune's judgement where Masamune trusts his, as well, as much as it can be a source of exasperation for both sides). This silent communication they share isn't perfect, however--in Masamune's normal route, Kojuro misunderstands Masamune's intention of wanting to expand his army and call himself a "king" as a corruptible show of power. Masamune's true intent was truly just a front to rescue the people left who had "lost their light" during the struggles of war, in the same way that Kojuro had saved Masamune during the loss of his right eye. This is an act of consideration and gratitude that the dragon only hints at, aware that Kojuro might indeed be missing the point of his actions but knowing he'll fill in the rest of the details on his own. Though Masamune is cocky where he shouldn't be, he's not the type of individual to look down on others: he acknowledges someone's skill while stating he can surpass them, he helps someone with their struggles but not in a way that won't allow them to solve things on their own.
And that's the One-Eyed Dragon. Both predictable and unpredictable, straightforward with some things, quiet in others, but always entirely undeterred from voicing his own opinion. With a great sense of inner resolve and strength, those following the back of Date Masamune can be sure that he'll provide the foundation for one crazy party.
◎ Powers/Abilities:
In this truly historically accurate account of the Sengoku era, Date Masamune is capable of making localized explosions where he fights, and making lightning rush through his swords while taking down whole armies by himself. We're just going to keep the latter. His trademark ability is his swordplay, which while usually limited to one sword, can move to a skillful wielding of six (that's six) swords, three in each hand set between his fingers. This gives him an image of striking with a claw, and absolutely no one questions it, even when he's somehow spinning all three of them like some kind of messed propellor. Here is a list of his known moveset. Basically, he's an incredibly strong warrior with a large amount of stamina, capable of taking more than a few hits in a battle.
Somehow, in Basara Land, being able to jump really, really high and live through getting punched with a force that smashes you through several walls is Normal and Human.
Still, crazy parties aren't the only thing Masamune's good at. While he leaves most of the strategic work to his second, Katakura Kojuro (who is without a doubt more fit for it), he's also capable of leading an army on his own. He is not immensely strategically gifted, but he is charismatic, and has a fair bit of intelligence of his own, which manifests mostly in intuition and understanding. At his core, Masamune is not exactly an incredible forward thinker (again, that's Kojuro)--he's mostly very good at adapting to situations as they come.
In addition, historically Masamune was pretty good at cooking! Oshuu's badasses are basically Tough Dude Cooking Mamas, considering what comes second to Kojuro after Masamune might indeed be his vegetables.
