so he just winces and nods a bit at her question, deciding that perhaps he should just go about this job as efficiently as possible.
though he pauses, glancing down at a newspaper that someone happened to leave on a bench nearby. for some reason it manages to catch his eye, so he walks over and picks it up... faltering a bit as it confirms what he'd suspected. ]
The date on this newspaper... this dimension is a few years ahead of ourrs. [ though the date really isn't the most startling thing about this particular newspaper - no, that would be the giant picture of him on its front page, along with a headline announcing some new achievement he's made as president of spirius.
that's new. ]

not that she's thinking about that very long, when she peers over his shoulder and sees their very own fail!dad plastered front and center. she stops speaking then, eyes moving from the picture, to ludger, back to the picture. yup. that's him. poorer in person, certainly, but still most definitely him. no matter how many times she experiences these fractured dimensions, even having seen muzét that wasn't her muzét and being the milla that isn't really milla--she's still not used to seeing two of the same person, newspaper or not.
never would she have thought a guy like this would end up in a spot as big as "president of spirius". apparently. still not as big as lord of spirits though just saying. ]
... Well. It looks like you're making progress in more than one way, though I guess that's technically not you. [ a mumble as she idly scans the contents. ] From crippling debt to president in a few years? Pretty big jump.
[ big enough to be that divergence catalyst thing? she doesn't know. ]

not that he disagrees with her. ]
I guess we need to look into it more... I'm not sure what to do if it turns out I'm the catalyst this time. [ okay, he knows what he has to do, but that's going to be very weird. since clearly they are from a pre-victor canon point. ]
It might be something else too though. [ him becoming rich just might be the normal progression of events okay!! ] For now, we should probably investigate... me.
[ wow that sounded kind of narcissistic. ]

He... [ uh. ] You probably won't be. That'd be too easy, and you people are all about being complicated. [ too bad she's also way too awkward to openly empathize with his situation. at least she tried. honestly, it just sounds she's insulting him, given her tone. a bit of her hopes it comes across the way, she doesn't know how to handle positivity from any one of them.
shifting her weight onto her other leg, she adds: ] ... Either way, maybe you should investigate less obviously this time around. It's not like you can go around asking people about yourself.
[ sigh. is she going to have to personally hear about all the great accomplishments of notactuallyhimbutreallycooler!ludger.
she's just going to nab that paper straight from ludger's hands, all right. ]

It's not like we do it that way on purpose. [ that's just how it always works out. without fail. so she's probably right... for all he knows, it'll turn out to be something incredibly minor that somehow shifts his luck from penniless bum to billionaire. ]
Less obviously? Oh, you're right. If I walk around like this, people will recognize me.
[ though that actually could make things simpler... granted, if anyone realizes there's two of them walking around, things will get very complicated very fast. ]
Maybe we should get disguises. [ he almost protests when she grabs the paper away from him, but oh well. it's not like he was really looking at it much anymore - at least older him looks dignified. or something. ]

... Wait, what do you mean "we"? I'm not the one plastered on the front of a newspaper. [ not that a disguise was a bad idea--it was the direction she was going with. any excuse to make ludger look embarrassing, really, but in a way it was a completely serious suggestion. he really can't go around looking like a corporate bigwig when he's really not.
she doesn't want to deal with that headache. ]
What I do doesn't matter as much as what you do here. [ or in general, really, but it isn't as if she'll admit that. ] And I'm not exactly looking to play dress up with you, okay?
[ with that she'll direct her attention to the writing in her hands. sure, it's nice to feel included, but not in this, exactly. kind of. ]
no subject
But don't you think it's better to be safe? We don't know what the Milla of this dimension is up to either.
[ he just doesn't want to be the only one who has to wear some bizarre disguise okay. ] You could have become someone important too. [ okay, she was always pretty important, but that's not the point. ]
Maybe there'll be something about you in there.
